Nounce helps you hear, understand, and practice the pronunciation of English words you highlight while reading. This policy explains what data we handle and why. It covers the Nounce Chrome extension, Mac app, and web app, which follow the same practices.

What we collect and why

The word or phrase you select. When you invoke Nounce on a highlighted selection, that text (and a short surrounding sentence, for contextual meaning) is sent to our backend to generate pronunciation and meaning. We do not scan, read, or transmit any page content you have not explicitly selected and acted on.
Voice recordings you make. When you choose to practice a word, your microphone audio is captured and sent to our pronunciation-assessment provider to produce per-syllable feedback. Recording only happens when you start it.
Your email address. Used solely to create and sign in to your account (passwordless one-time code) and to manage your subscription.
A random device identifier. Generated locally for anonymous usage so we can apply the free daily quota fairly. It is not tied to your identity.

We do not collect browsing history, keystrokes, form data, or the contents of pages you visit.

How data is used

To return pronunciation audio, IPA, contextual meaning, and practice feedback.
To authenticate you and enforce free-tier daily limits.
To process subscription payments (via Stripe).

We do notsell your data, share it with third parties for advertising, or use it for any purpose unrelated to delivering Nounce's core features.

Third-party processors

Supabase — account authentication and data storage (US region).
Anthropic (Claude) — generates contextual meaning and pronunciation tips.
Microsoft Azure Speech — text-to-speech audio and pronunciation assessment.
Cloudflare — hosts the backend API and caches audio.
Stripe — payment processing; we never see your card details.

Each processes data only to provide its part of the service.

Storage and retention

Your saved words and account record are retained while your account is active.
Cached pronunciation audio is stored to keep the service fast and inexpensive.
Voice recordings are sent for real-time assessment and are not retained as a permanent library.
Locally, the extension stores only your session token and device identifier. Signing out clears the session.

Your choices

You can sign out at any time from the extension popup or web app.
You can manage or cancel your subscription from the billing portal.
